Therapy Thursday – Relationships, part 2

Session 9: My Role in Relationships

Sigh…. the eternal task of self-reflection.  In this session, we focused on my role in relationships.

I have always been independent and strong-willed, and disinclined to rely on a partner for much of anything, preferring to problem-solve on my own. (Is it because I have a fear of appearing “needy”? Do I worry that I’ll come to depend on someone, only to be hurt and disappointed? Yes and yes.)

I need to change my mindset and recognize that accepting help from a partner does NOT make me a “helpless female.”  A partner who loves me will want to help make my life easier and better, and I will not be seen as a burden or “needy”.

Homework Assignment:

Recognize that love and trust are inextricably entwined in healthy relationships.

Our session closed with a reminder that men generally want three things in life:

  • a war to fight (challenge)
  • a grand adventure (adventure)
  • a damsel to rescue (love)

Really, don’t we all want lives filled with challenges, adventure and love?
