Labyrinth Lessons – Time has Its Own Agenda

Reflections from a labyrinth walk taken on August 29, 2021.

The question: Will it be worth the wait?

Time is nature's way of keeping everything from happening at once.

Do you want his presence or his promise?

Powerful question. What is more important to you – someone who is “around”, or someone who honors their word?

It can be a tricky choice, depending on whether you are looking for a short-term win or long term gains.

Sometimes, you think you just want someone to BE there, to fill the void.  In reality, what you really want is the security of knowing that you can count on them when you really  need them.

Yet, the question itself is telling. This is as much a question about how you live your life, as it is about your faith.

Birth and Death – both can be a nine month process.

This walk was all about the elements of time, and how we measure it.

The ticking of a clock, the migration the birds, the turning of seasons.

For some, the nine months of a pregnancy marks a countdown to  monumental  life changes.

Birth is a time of radical transformation- and not just for the baby!

But the nine months of a pregnancy is not just about birth.  It is also about death-  the death of the life that existed before the pregnancy.  The dichotomy of life means that new beginnings also signify that something else has (or will) end.

The metamorphosis  from life to death is transformative, but have you ever stopped to consider when that evolution begins?

As children, we often race to adulthood, only to desperately wish that we could slow down or stop the clock as we age.

I think we unconsciously recognize that beginnings and endings are inexorably intertwined, and it frightens us.

Birth and death are not two different states, but they are different aspects of the same state.

You don’t forget what’s really important to you.

We can pretend something doesn’t matter. We can deny that it is important to us.

But always, always, our inner voice will whisper the truth to us.  And the truth will not be denied.
