Habitat for Humanity Malawi: Day 6

Monday, Malarone & Monkeys

I had heard that Malarone can cause vivid and strange dreams, but I hadn’t experienced any up until now. Last night’s dreams were crazy and I tossed and turned all night. By the morning, I has woken and slept repeatedly, until one dream was so awful that it woke me around 4:00 a.m. and I couldn’t go back to sleep.

Meredith woke around 5:15/5:30 and together, we left the room to seek out monkeys. We found them- a scant fifty feet from our room, in the outdoor dining area of the hotel. It was fun watching them!

Pete did the spiritual focus this morning, and in a reading he shared with us, he asked us to consider, “What do we want to want?”

I’m pleased to report that we finished building the walls of house 1 and it is ready for a roof.

One thing that I’ve noticed is the number of unfinished homes in this village (and in others) as we’re driving to and from the site. It was explained that oftentimes, if someone comes into a windfall, they have ambitious dreams of building a big home. It’s not uncommon for them to then spend the windfall in the early to middle stages of building their new home, and then not be able to come up with adequate funds to be able to finish it.

On one hand, it’s easy to be judgmental about this and think, “why didn’t they make better financial decisions after struggling for so long? They squandered the opportunity to have a small and modest home that would have adequately protected them from the elements and be able to have the funds for food during times of struggle, and enough money for their children’s education.”

However, if we look at our OWN culture and society, with its growing credit card debt and shrinking savings, we’d realize that many of us are equal in that respect, however the consequences for us are rarely as dire as they are for people here.
